Unclaimed Money Malaysia: How to Check and Claim Funds Through eGUMIS
Malaysia had recorded more than RM13 billion in unclaimed money as at 31 January 2026, according to Accountant General Datuk Zainani Jusoh. Around RM7 billion remained in the Consolidated Trust Account, while the rest had been transferred to the Consolidated Revenue Account after remaining unclaimed for 10 years.
That transfer does not cancel the owner's right to the money. The rightful owner, executor or legally authorised estate administrator can still submit a claim.
The official platform is eGUMIS, or the Electronic Government Unclaimed Money Information System, operated by Jabatan Akauntan Negara Malaysia (JANM). Searching, registering and claiming are free. JANM does not appoint agents or charge a processing fee.
This guide explains how to check unclaimed money using an identification number, submit an online claim, prepare the required documents and track the application through the current 2026 eGUMIS process.

What is unclaimed money in Malaysia?
Unclaimed money, or Wang Tak Dituntut (WTD), is governed by the Unclaimed Moneys Act 1965. Under JANM's current definition, it falls into three categories.
1. Money payable but unpaid for at least two years
This is money that a company or institution was legally required to pay but did not successfully deliver to the owner.
Examples include:
- Unpaid salaries, wages, bonuses and commissions
- Dividends or declared profits
- Approved insurance claim payments
- Expired bank drafts or cashier's orders
- Matured fixed deposits without automatic-renewal instructions
- Refundable tender deposits after their purpose has ended
- Credit balances owed by businesses
2. Money in an account not operated for at least seven years
Examples include:
- Dormant savings accounts
- Dormant current accounts
- Fixed deposits with automatic-renewal instructions
3. Money in a trade account dormant for at least two years
Examples include:
- Trade creditor balances
- Trade debtor accounts with credit balances
The two-year threshold for the first and third categories reflects the current law. The Unclaimed Moneys (Amendment) Act 2024 took effect on 1 August 2024 and changed the first category from one year to two years. This is why some older guides still refer to a one-year period.
Where does unclaimed money usually come from?
| Source | How the money becomes unclaimed |
|---|---|
| Bank accounts | The account becomes dormant and the bank cannot reach the owner |
| Fixed deposits | The deposit matures but the payout is not collected |
| Employment | Final salary, bonus or commission remains unpaid |
| Insurance | An approved claim, benefit or refund is not collected |
| Investments | A dividend or distribution cannot reach the registered owner |
| Utility or tenancy deposits | A refund remains uncollected after the account or tenancy ends |
| Bank drafts and cashier's orders | The instrument expires before it is deposited |
| Business accounts | A supplier or customer credit balance remains dormant |
eGUMIS only displays records that a bank, insurer, employer or other reporting entity has already surrendered to the Registrar of Unclaimed Moneys. A sum will not appear in eGUMIS before the reporting entity completes that process.
How to check and claim unclaimed money through eGUMIS
The process begins with a public search and, where a record is found, continues through registration, document submission and payment.
Step 1: Open the official eGUMIS portal
Go directly to the official eGUMIS website and confirm that the domain in the browser address bar is egumis.anm.gov.my.
Do not use a link sent by an unknown person through SMS, WhatsApp, email or social media. JANM states that it has never appointed an individual, company or firm to act as an agent for unclaimed-money claims.

Step 2: Search using an identification number
From the menu, select Search, followed by WTD Search. Enter the relevant identification number and complete the security check.
The portal accepts identifiers such as:
- MyKad number
- Old identity-card number
- Police or military identification number
- Passport number
- Birth-certificate number
- Company registration number
The public search returns only the number of matching records. You must register and log in to view the owner's name, reporting entity, reference number and amount.
The June 2026 eGUMIS user manual describes the public search as unlimited. After login, searches are limited to two identification numbers per day, subject to the portal's current system policy.

Step 3: Register for an eGUMIS account
Select Registration and complete the required fields:
- Full name exactly as shown on the identification document
- Identification type and number
- Valid email address
- Username
- Acceptance of the terms and conditions
Use an email account that you can access. eGUMIS sends the temporary password and subsequent application notices to the registered email address.

Step 4: Log in and complete your profile
Log in using the username and temporary password sent to your email. The current portal also supports MyDigital ID login for eligible Malaysian users.
At the first login, the portal requires you to:
- Create a new password
- Complete your address
- Add your contact details
- Save the profile before continuing
The eGUMIS manual requires a password of at least eight characters containing uppercase letters, lowercase letters and numbers.

Step 5: Search again and select the record
Once logged in, search using the identification number again. A matching record may show:
- Owner's name
- Identification number
- Reference number
- Type of unclaimed money
- Financial year
- Reporting entity
- Amount
Tick the record you intend to claim and select Continue With Application.

Step 6: Enter the recipient and bank-account details
Select Add Recipient and enter the requested information:
- Recipient's full name
- Identification number
- Email address or mobile number
- Residential or correspondence address
- Bank name
- Bank-account number
- Amount being claimed
The bank name, account number and account holder's name must match the bank statement uploaded in the next step. A mismatch can trigger a document query and delay the claim.

Step 7: Upload the supporting documents
eGUMIS generates a checklist based on the type of claimant and record. A straightforward claim for your own money commonly requires:
- A completed UMA-7 claim form, where requested
- Front and back of your identification card
- An active savings or current-account statement showing your name, bank name and account number
- A confirmation letter from the reporting entity when the surrendered record does not match your current identification details
The current manual lists PDF, PNG, JPG and JPEG as supported file formats. Upload clear and complete documents; cropped bank statements that omit the account holder's name are likely to be queried.
JANM does not accept a Tabung Haji account, investment account, loan account or e-wallet as the receiving account for an eGUMIS payment.

Step 8: Review the declaration and submit
Check every field before submitting:
- Claimant and recipient details
- Bank name and account number
- Claim amount
- Uploaded identification and bank documents
- Any confirmation letter or original-document requirement
Accept the declaration and terms and conditions, then submit the application. The eGUMIS manual states that the application cannot be edited after final confirmation.
An unsubmitted draft is automatically deleted after seven days.
Step 9: Track the application status
Open Senarai Permohonan, or Application List, and check the status column.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Draft | The application has not been submitted |
| First verification of documents | The first-stage document review is in progress |
| First queries of documents | A document must be corrected, replaced or supplemented |
| Second verification of documents | The second-stage review is in progress |
| Second queries document | JANM requires further supporting information |
| New | The claim has been verified and sent for payment processing |
| Done | Payment has been made |
| Application inquiry | The application has been rejected or requires further attention |
An unanswered document query may be deleted after three months. The eGUMIS FAQ also states that application records remain available in the system for up to two years.
Documents required for an eGUMIS claim
The exact checklist depends on the record and claimant. The table below covers the most common cases.
| Claim situation | Documents commonly required |
|---|---|
| Claiming your own money | Identification document, active bank statement, UMA-7 form where required, and a confirmation letter if the record does not match your current details |
| Savings, current or fixed-deposit claim | Identification document and active bank statement; a joint account may require the involvement of all account holders according to its signing conditions |
| Bank draft or cashier's order | Original instrument or original application form, confirmation letter and any indemnity documents requested when the original cannot be produced |
| Non-Malaysian claimant | Current passport, passport used during the original transaction and complete bank or international-transfer details |
| Company claim | Company registration documents, authorised officer's identification and an active company bank statement |
| Deceased owner | Death certificate, claimant's identification, authority to administer the estate and relevant bank details |
When original documents must be delivered
Some claims require an original confirmation letter, banking instrument or estate document. Where the eGUMIS checklist asks for an original, it must reach a JANM counter or be sent by registered post within seven working days of the online submission.
Not every claim requires physical delivery. Follow the checklist generated for the specific application rather than sending documents that JANM has not requested.
How to claim unclaimed money for a deceased person
A family relationship alone does not automatically authorise someone to receive a deceased person's unclaimed money. The claim must be submitted by a person who has recognised authority to administer the estate.
Who may submit the claim?
Depending on the estate documents, this may include:
- The executor named in a grant of probate
- A legally appointed administrator
- A person authorised under an accepted distribution order or estate-administration document
- Another representative recognised by JANM under the applicable estate process
Documents commonly required
- UMA-7 form signed by the administrator or executor
- Administrator's or executor's identification document
- Active bank statement in that person's name
- Death certificate
- Grant of probate, letters of administration, distribution order or another authority accepted by JANM
- Estate asset list where required
- Original supporting document or reporting entity's confirmation letter where applicable
Estate authority may be issued by the High Court, the relevant authority in Sabah or Sarawak, the Department of the Director General of Lands and Mines or Amanah Raya Berhad, depending on the estate.
A faraid certificate alone is not proof of authority to administer the estate. A foreign grant, court order or letter of administration generally needs to be registered and sealed by the Malaysian High Court before JANM will accept it.
How long does an eGUMIS claim take?
Document review and payment are separate stages.
JANM conducts two stages of document verification. The published 30-working-day payment period begins only after JANM notifies the claimant that the supporting documents have passed verification.
It does not begin on the day the online application is submitted. A document query, missing original or mismatch in bank details can extend the overall process.
What to do when eGUMIS shows no record
A zero-result search does not always mean that no money exists. Common explanations include:
- The bank, insurer, employer or company has not yet surrendered the money to the Registrar.
- The record is held under an old identity-card, passport or company-registration number.
- The information submitted by the reporting entity does not match the claimant's current details.
- Another application has already been started for the record.
- The money does not meet the legal definition of unclaimed money administered through eGUMIS.
Contact the bank, insurer, employer or company that originally owed the money. Ask it to confirm whether the amount has been surrendered to JANM and which identification number was used. Where necessary, request a written confirmation letter for the claim.
Can money in the Consolidated Revenue Account still be claimed?
Yes. After remaining unclaimed for 10 years, money may be transferred from the Consolidated Trust Account to the Consolidated Revenue Account. This is an accounting transfer, not a forfeiture of the owner's claim.
Section 13(1) of the Unclaimed Moneys Act 1965 allows the rightful owner or legally authorised claimant to apply without a time limit. The payment does not include interest; it is based on the amount recorded by the Registrar.
Common eGUMIS claim mistakes
Most avoidable delays come from incomplete or inconsistent documents:
- Uploading a bank statement that does not show the account holder's name.
- Entering a bank-account number that differs from the uploaded statement.
- Naming a Tabung Haji, investment, loan or e-wallet account as the receiving account.
- Uploading blurred, cropped or unreadable identification documents.
- Ignoring a document query in the application list.
- Missing the seven-working-day deadline for an original document requested by JANM.
- Assuming the 30-working-day payment period begins on the submission date.
- Sending unnecessary physical documents instead of following the application-specific checklist.
How to avoid unclaimed-money scams
JANM's current warnings focus on three common tactics.
Fake claim agents
JANM and the Ministry of Finance have not appointed private agents, companies or law firms to search for or recover unclaimed money on behalf of the public. Claims made directly through eGUMIS are free.
Unsolicited "money found" emails
JANM may send transactional messages after you register or submit an application. However, its Unclaimed Moneys Management Division has warned that it does not send unsolicited emails telling members of the public that money has already been found in their name.
Do not click a payment link or provide banking credentials in response to such a message. Check the record directly through eGUMIS.
Unofficial mobile applications
Download the eGUMIS mobile application only through an official app store. JANM has specifically warned against third-party APK platforms because unofficial packages may contain malware or expose personal information.
Never share:
- Online-banking usernames or passwords
- One-time passwords
- MyDigital ID approvals
- Full card details
- Remote access to your phone or computer
What to do after receiving unclaimed money
Treat the payment according to your current financial priorities rather than as free spending money.
Start by restoring an emergency fund if yours is below target, then clear high-interest debt and set aside money for bills due within the next few months. For money that must remain readily accessible, compare the liquidity and risks of safe and low-risk investments in Malaysia before choosing where to keep it.
A larger payment can also support long-term goals. Rather than investing the full amount immediately, decide how it fits into your retirement plan, time horizon and overall portfolio.
Keep unused cash productive with StashAway Simple™
For money that is not needed immediately, StashAway Simple™ is a cash management portfolio with no minimum balance and no lock-in period. Its projected rate can change and returns are not guaranteed, so it should complement an accessible emergency fund rather than replace one.

Yes. Enter the identification number on the public eGUMIS search page. The public result shows the number of matching records. Registration and login are required to view full details and submit a claim.
Is the eGUMIS search free?
Yes. JANM does not charge a fee to search, register or submit an application.
Is there a minimum claim amount?
No. JANM states that the Registrar has not set a minimum claim amount.

The company may not have surrendered the money yet, or it may have used an old or different identification number. Contact the reporting entity and request confirmation.
How long will payment take?
After JANM confirms that the supporting documents have passed verification, payment should be credited within 30 working days. The period does not begin on the original submission date.
Check before you submit
A successful eGUMIS claim depends mainly on matching information. Before submitting, make sure that the identification details, recipient name, bank-account number and bank statement all agree. Check the application list regularly and respond promptly to any document query.
Use only the official eGUMIS portal, submit the claim yourself and keep the application reference and payment records after the claim is completed.
