How to File Income Tax in Malaysia for the First Time (2027 Guide for YA 2026)

05 November 2026
Personal Finance

If you started earning in 2026, your first Malaysian income tax return is for Year of Assessment (YA) 2026, and you file it in 2027. Get the year right before you click anything in MyTax, because the return uses the rules in force for 2026. Budget 2027's proposed RM 12,000 individual relief is set to start from YA 2027, so it won't apply to this return.

As a first-time filer, you check your tax number, activate MyTax access, pick the right return, reconcile your income and claims, then sign and save the acknowledgment. Having a tax number, paying tax through payroll and submitting an annual return are three different things. This guide explains each, with a YA 2026 calculation example.

You have a few months to prepare. e-Filing for YA 2025 opened in March 2026, and HASiL hasn't yet announced the 2027 dates for YA 2026 returns. Use the time to register, activate your login and collect your 2026 records, so the return itself is a short job once the form opens.

Malaysian income tax dates you must know

A year of assessment is the year the income was earned. For the ordinary individual annual return, you file in the following calendar year. Picking the correct year keeps a payslip or relief receipt out of the wrong return.

HASiL hasn't yet published the 2027 filing programme, which sets the dates for YA 2026 returns. It normally publishes the programme early in the year, as it did with the 2026 filing programme announcement. For reference, this is what the 2026 programme set for YA 2025 returns.

e-B, resident individual carrying on businessYA 202530 June 202615 days, to 15 July 2026

Source: HASiL 2026 filing programme (as of 2 November 2026)

The statutory due dates are set in law, while the online grace period is an administrative extension that HASiL decides each year. Expect the YA 2026 deadlines to follow the same pattern of an earlier date for individuals without business income and a later one for those with a business, but confirm the 2027 dates and any grace period in HASiL's filing programmes once they appear.

If you also had income in 2025 and never filed for YA 2025, both 2026 windows have closed. Submit that return now through the late-filing process. Filing late and paying late are separate compliance issues, so submitting the return doesn't by itself settle an outstanding balance or remove a penalty.

The income year sets the YA; filing normally follows in the next year.

Who needs to register and who needs to file?

Start with your income sources and filing history. The salary threshold people often quote is only part of the picture: reliefs affect how much tax you end up paying, while a filing obligation can also come from business activity, a previous return or a request from HASiL.

TIN means Tax Identification Number, which identifies your tax record. PCB, also called Monthly Tax Deduction (MTD), is tax deducted through payroll. Your tax liability is the amount calculated under the rules, and the annual return reports the information needed to work it out.

New salaried employees

Collect the EA or EC statement from each employer and check whether you have any income outside employment. If your first job started partway through 2026, your annual income may be well below a full year's salary. Work from what you actually earned in the year, not from one payslip multiplied by twelve.

Freelancers, side hustlers and sole proprietors

HASiL recognises business activity such as online selling, copywriting, tuition and e-hailing. A small side business still counts, even if you also have an employer. Your records should show revenue, expenses and how you arrived at the tax adjustments, including in a year when the business makes a loss.

Students, gig workers and multiple employers

What you call yourself doesn't decide the tax treatment. A student with no income is in a different position from a student running an online shop. If you switched employers, you need records from both. If you receive platform payments, work out whether they come from a business or from employment. Reconcile the whole year's activity before choosing a form.

Non-residents

Tax residence is decided under section 7 of the Income Tax Act, which sets out several residence tests, and citizenship alone doesn't settle it. A foreign citizen can be resident for tax purposes. Non-residents generally face different rates and have limited access to personal reliefs, so confirm your status before using a resident calculation.

When PCB does not replace a return

Some employees can elect to treat MTD as final tax, subject to HASiL's conditions. The conditions cover the type of employment income, staying with the same employer, correctly computed deductions including benefits, and no joint assessment election. HASiL's current guidance also covers employees who start partway through the year.

Business income, more than one employer, benefits left out of PCB or other income all make the election harder to rely on. You may also want to file to claim reliefs or recover an overpayment. If you're unsure whether you qualify, check with HASiL before deciding not to submit.

Step 1: Check your tax identification number

You may already have a TIN. HASiL states that Malaysian citizens and permanent residents aged 18 and above receive automatic registration using National Registration Department data. Check for an existing record first so you don't create a duplicate application.

Open the official MyTax portal and look for TIN Search or the tax-profile service. If access or verification fails, you can also check through HASiL's contact centre or offices. Keep the confirmed number with your tax records; it is different from your MyTax password.

If you aren't automatically registered, you apply through e-Daftar on MyTax. The registration page lists the identity documents needed for non-citizens and temporary residents, plus business documents for those with a business. Follow the category the application shows you.

Older individual records may show SG or OG. HASiL's TIN format reference explains the change to IG while retaining the numeric characters. An unfamiliar prefix is no reason to register again.

Step 2: Activate MyTax access through e-KYC or e-CP55D

Having a tax record doesn't mean you have an activated digital certificate. HASiL's first-login instructions start with selecting the identification type, entering your identification number and choosing Submit. If the system says no digital certificate exists, it points you to an activation method.

The public login screen shows the identification selector and the services available before you log in. Only enter your identity details in the official portal.

HASiL offers e-KYC through the MyTax mobile application and e-CP55D through the web portal. e-KYC verifies your identity using a photo of your identity document and a selfie. e-CP55D is the route for a desktop or laptop. Follow the instructions and document list for whichever you choose.

Make sure you can access the email address registered with HASiL. Once verification succeeds, follow the activation and password instructions, then return to the login page. If your record has an old email address, your identity doesn't match, or a certificate already exists, sort it out through HASiL's support channels before starting another application. Doing this before the 2027 season opens saves you from queuing for help in the busiest weeks.

The public portal also has a User Manual menu. It helps when the labels or login options differ from an older tutorial.

Step 3: Prepare these documents before e-Filing

Set up a folder for 2026 before opening the return, holding both the figures you'll enter and the evidence behind them. Keeping employment, business and relief records apart makes discrepancies easier to spot.

Employers must provide EA or EC remuneration statements by the last day of February in the following year, so your 2026 statement is due by the end of February 2027. If you changed jobs, get one from every employer. If a statement is missing, chase payroll for it instead of estimating.

RecordWhat to checkTypical source
EA or EC formEmployment income, benefits and PCB for the correct yearEach employer
EPF statementEligible contributions and amounts actually paidKWSP or i-Akaun
Insurance or takaful tax statementPremium category and eligible allocationInsurer or takaful operator
Receipts, invoices and e-invoicesEligible spending, payment date and claimantMerchant or service provider
Bank account detailsCorrect active refund account in your nameYour bank
Business recordsRevenue, expenses and supporting calculationsYour bookkeeping and platform records
Zakat receiptsEligible payment and receiving authorityAuthorised religious institution

Compare EA totals with your payslips, any payroll corrections and PCB records. Note the reason for any difference, such as a bonus, an amended statement or pay from another employer. For business activity, match platform reports to bank receipts so that one sale paid out in several deposits isn't counted more than once.

For reliefs, group receipts by category and total the eligible spending first, then apply the category limit and conditions. An insurance payment can contain several components, so use the insurer's tax statement to split it across the premium fields. Keep readable copies of receipts printed on paper that fades.

Ask for e-invoices on relief purchases

For 2026 spending, LHDN is encouraging buyers to request an e-invoice for every purchase linked to an individual tax relief, by giving the seller their identification number or TIN. Under a pilot, relief information from those e-invoices may be pre-filled in the YA 2026 return for categories such as personal computers and smartphones, lifestyle spending, insurance and childcare centre fees. You can review the transactions in the MyInvois portal.

Pre-filled figures still need checking. Compare each amount with your own receipts and statements, and remove anything that doesn't meet the relief conditions or that your spouse is claiming instead.

Step 4: Choose e-BE, e-B or e-M

Your form depends on tax residence and whether you carry on a business. HASiL's individual form descriptions distinguish resident non-business, resident business and non-resident returns. Answer the residence question first, then the business one.

FormOrdinary usePractical implication
e-BEResident individual without business incomeEmployment and other non-business income
e-BResident individual carrying on businessInclude employment and other income in the same return
e-MNon-resident individualUse the non-resident return and tax treatment

Source: HASiL individual income tax guidance (as of 2 November 2026)

Decide residence first, then business activity, to choose an ordinary individual return.

A salaried employee who also runs a freelance business generally uses e-B, which covers the salary too, instead of filing a separate e-BE. Some specialist worker categories and unusual situations use other forms, so check the official descriptions if neither ordinary route fits.

An overseas client or payment platform doesn't make income foreign-sourced. Where the work is done, what kind of activity it is, your residence, and any exemptions and conditions all matter. Work you perform from Malaysia for an overseas customer needs to be classified properly, so read HASiL's guidance or get help if the source of income is unclear.

Step 5: Complete e-BE or e-B section by section

Select the correct form and YA 2026 before entering any figures, keep your record totals beside you and review any prefilled data. After logging in, go to ezHasil Services, e-Filing and e-Form. The menu and form screenshots here come from HASiL's public YA 2025 training guide, the latest available; the YA 2026 screens may change slightly when the 2027 forms open.

The e-Filing entry in ezHasil Services (HASiL training guide, page 29).

Choose the form, then its assessment year using the selector beside it. For your first return, that is YA 2026.

Form and YA selectors from HASiL's YA 2025 training guide, page 31.

Personal information, residence and tax profile

Check your identity, contact details, marital status, assessment choice and bank details. Answer the residence questions for 2026: a move or job change after that year doesn't change what you report for it.

Employment income and benefits

Copy the annual employment figures from each EA or EC statement, including taxable benefits and perquisites where required. PCB and EPF are deductions from your pay, so don't add them on top of your salary. If a prefilled amount already includes an employer's annual figure, confirm or replace it so the same gross salary isn't counted twice.

Business, rental and other income

For e-B, work out the business calculation before entering the amounts. Revenue, allowable expenses, capital allowances and tax adjustments are different things. Personal spending paid from a business bank account is still personal spending. Classify rent and other income under their own rules and worksheets, and keep them out of employment income.

Reliefs and permitted deductions

Reliefs reduce your chargeable income; they don't refund what you spent. Use the rules for YA 2026. HASiL's relief overview page still shows YA 2025, so work from the 2026 MTD specification's relief schedule, read with the Finance Act 2025 changes that apply from YA 2026. Individual relief stays at RM 9,000, and EPF and life insurance or family takaful have separate RM 4,000 and RM 3,000 limits. Read each category's conditions before claiming the maximum.

A receipt proves the payment, but the claim also has to meet the category's conditions. Check who the relief is for, whether the product or service qualifies, and whether your spouse has already claimed the same spending. Claim each expense under one category only.

Rebates, including zakat

Rebates reduce tax after it has been calculated. Eligible zakat or fitrah paid to the relevant religious authority is limited as a rebate to the income tax charged for the year. Keep the payment record and follow the form's instructions, including for any amount already reflected through payroll.

PCB, instalments and the balance

Enter the PCB and instalments paid for YA 2026, using your EA and payment records. If what you've paid exceeds the final tax, the return shows an overpayment; if it's less, you have a balance to pay. Compare the result with your own calculation before declaring it correct.

The income, PCB and individual-relief fields sit in different parts of the form. The masked amounts come from HASiL's training example.

Declaration and acknowledgment

Review the full summary, including the number of employers, income totals, reliefs and payments. Look especially for a missing employer, duplicated income, a premium in the wrong field and an incorrect bank account. Go on to the declaration and digital submission only when those figures agree.

Save the acknowledgment and a copy of the filed return. A saved draft hasn't been filed: the submission confirmation and reference number are your proof. Any tax payment is a separate step.

Signing and submitting the return and printing the acknowledgment and filed e-BE are separate controls.

Submission and download controls from HASiL's training guide, pages 50 and 51.

Worked example: Salary, chargeable income and tax payable

Say you're a resident filing for YA 2026 with employment income of RM 60,000 and no other income. You claim RM 9,000 individual relief, RM 4,000 EPF relief (your 11% employee contribution of RM 6,600, capped at RM 4,000) and RM 1,200 life-insurance relief, which meets the category rules. You have no rebates or other adjustments.

YA 2026 uses the same resident bands as YA 2025. HASiL's resident schedule charges RM 600 tax on the first RM 35,000 and 6% on the next band, up to RM 50,000, and the 2026 MTD specification uses the same rates. The 6% rate applies only to income within that band, not to the full salary.

Total reliefsRM 9,000 + RM 4,000 + RM 1,200RM 14,200

OverpaymentRM 1,500 − RM 1,248RM 252

Source: HASiL resident tax schedule, MTD 2026 relief schedule (as of 2 November 2026). Example only.

Reliefs reduce income, while PCB is a credit for tax already paid. Add business income, a missed benefit or an ineligible claim and the RM 252 refund changes. The RM 400 individual rebate doesn't apply here because chargeable income is above RM 35,000.

Reliefs produce chargeable income, the tax schedule produces tax, and PCB then sets the balance or overpayment.

After filing: Refunds, amendments, payments and records

Keep the filed return and acknowledgment together. Then deal with the result: an overpayment, a tax balance or information that needs correcting. Each has its own follow-up process, so you never submit a second original return for the same year.

HASiL's refund client charter states 30 working days after e-Filing and 90 working days after manual submission, subject to the information and any required supporting review. These are service targets, so make sure your bank account is correct and reply quickly if HASiL asks for documents.

If you owe tax, follow HASiL's current payment methods and bill-reference instructions. Filing doesn't trigger a payment, so pay separately, keep the receipt and check it against your tax record.

To fix a mistake, use the amendment route that fits the error. An Amended Return Form covers certain self-amendments within six months from the due date, provided conditions are met, including that the original return was filed on time. Other corrections may need a detailed letter and supporting documents sent to the office handling your file, explaining the error and the revised computation.

Keep EA forms, receipts and filed-return records for at least seven years. HASiL's guidance is to keep supporting documents for seven years from the submission year. Late returns and business records can shift the starting point, and an open enquiry may mean keeping them longer. You don't usually attach these documents to the return, but you must keep the evidence you used to prepare it.

Budget 2027 proposals start from YA 2027, not your first return

Budget 2027 proposes raising individual relief from RM 9,000 to RM 12,000 and cutting selected tax bands. The Finance Ministry's tax measures annex dates these changes from YA 2027, which covers 2027 income filed in 2028. They are proposals until the Finance Bill is passed.

Your YA 2026 return uses RM 9,000 and the current bands. For the same RM 60,000 salary in 2027, the proposed RM 12,000 relief would bring chargeable income down to RM 42,800 and tax to RM 1,068 (RM 600 + RM 7,800 × 6%), which is RM 180 less.

Frequently asked questions

How do I file taxes for the first time in Malaysia?

Check your TIN, activate MyTax access and gather your income and claim records. Then choose the correct form and YA, review and submit digitally, and save both the filed return and the acknowledgment.

Do I need a TIN if I have no taxable income?

Citizens and permanent residents aged 18 and above are generally registered automatically, so you probably already have one. A TIN alone doesn't mean you owe tax or need to file.

Is my TIN the same as my old SG or OG tax file number?

Yes, apart from the prefix: individual numbers changed to IG while the digits stayed the same. Check the number in your official record if you only have an older document.

How do I activate MyTax without a PIN?

Start the first-login flow, and when it tells you no certificate exists, choose an activation route. HASiL offers e-CP55D on the web and e-KYC on the mobile app.

What is the difference between e-BE and e-B?

e-BE is the ordinary return for a resident individual without business income. e-B is for a resident carrying on a business, and it also covers that person's employment and other income.

Do freelance and Grab income need to be declared?

Yes, freelance and e-hailing income is assessed under the income tax rules and reported on your return. Regular business activity generally means a resident files e-B, even with a salary as well.

Can I file without an EA form?

Ask your employer for the statement, or a corrected one, first. If you still can't get it, contact HASiL about using accurate payroll records and other evidence for your annual income and PCB totals.

What if my employer already deducts PCB?

PCB is usually reconciled against your final tax in the annual return. Only employees who meet every condition can treat MTD as final tax and skip filing.

When do I file 2026 income?

Income earned in 2026 belongs to YA 2026, which you file in the 2027 individual cycle. e-Filing for the previous year opened in March, so start gathering your 2026 records now.

What is the tax filing deadline in 2027?

HASiL hasn't yet published the 2027 filing programme. In 2026 the dates were 30 April for e-BE and 30 June for e-B, each with 15 days' online grace, but confirm the 2027 dates once HASiL announces them.

Can I file late?

Yes. Submit the outstanding return as soon as possible and contact HASiL if you need help. Late filing and late payment can both carry consequences, and the 2026 windows for YA 2025 returns have closed.

Can I claim relief without receipts?

You need enough evidence to support a claim, and the claim must meet its conditions. For 2026 purchases, ask the seller for an e-invoice in your name; if a receipt is missing, ask for a replacement invoice or a valid statement.

How do I know if I owe tax or get a refund?

Compare your tax after rebates with the PCB and other payments made for the same YA. If you've paid more, you may get a refund; if less, you have a balance to pay. Your filed summary and tax account show the result.

Can foreigners use MyTax?

Yes. HASiL has registration routes and identity-document options for non-citizens. Confirm your TIN, digital-certificate access and tax residence: your form depends on residence, not nationality, so being foreign doesn't automatically mean e-M.

Does the RM 12,000 individual relief apply to my YA 2026 return?

No. RM 12,000 is a Budget 2027 proposal set to start from YA 2027, subject to the Finance Bill. Your YA 2026 return uses RM 9,000.

Get your first return ready early

Before you file, match every total to a record and check the income year and form one last time. After submitting, save the acknowledgment, pay any balance due and keep your evidence in case HASiL has questions later.
