Growth driven by America's 30 most iconic companies
Did you know?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was created by Charles Dow and Edward Jones in 1896 with 12 industrial companies — only General Electric survived in the index for over a century before being removed in 2018. Unlike most major indices, the Dow is price-weighted rather than market-cap weighted, meaning a $500 stock has five times the influence of a $100 stock regardless of their relative market sizes — a methodology that dates to an era before computers could easily calculate market capitalisation. Despite covering only 30 stocks, the Dow has been one of the most closely tracked indicators of US economic health for over 130 years, making it an iconic financial benchmark.
